Founders

The Icarus Foundation was conceived in February 2007 by six individuals with extensive experience in both tourism and environmental management who wished to foster a viable tourism sector. These individuals were Anna Pollock, Joe Kelly, Rachel Dodds, Peter Williams, Pat Corbett and Sonya Graci. Our current board is comprised of highly skilled individuals who also wish to ensure the sustainability of the tourism sector.

DR. JAMES GRAY DONALD
DR. JAMES GRAY DONALD is the Associate Vice-President & Sustainability Leader, Sears Canada. His role is to develop a roadmap for Sears Canada to become a leader in sustainability, help maintain a culture that supports this position in the marketplace and consult with internal teams and external organizations to implement appropriate programs and processes for the Company. Prior to joining Sears, James was Research Coordinator at the Centre for Sustainable Futures (University of Plymouth, U.K.) which had the largest financial support in the world, from a government, to research the integration of sustainability inside a university. James is a also trustee with Earthlinks, a U.K.-based charity, and serves on the curriculum committee for the proposed Environment and Urban Sustainability program at Ryerson University.
DR. SONYA GRACI
DR. SONYA GRACI is a specialist in sustainable tourism, corporate sustainability and environmental management and has over 15 years experience in these fields. Dr. Graci is currently an Assistant Professor at the Ted Rogers School of Hospitality and Tourism Management at Ryerson University. She's also the Director of Accommodating Green, an environmental consulting organization that works with organizations to integrate sustainability in business operations.
CHARLIE JAMES
CHARLIE JAMES brings more than twenty years of experience in travel and tourism marketing, sales, business management and operations. As President of Tourism Smart Marketing, Charlie is an effective strategist with a passion for sustainable tourism and website marketing, and provides a variety of consulting services designed specifically for the travel and tourism industry, weaving the power of the web into today's market needs. She has a Certificate in Internet Marketing & Business Strategy (CIMBS) from the University of British Columbia (UBC) and is a graduate of the University of BC 's Summer Institute in Sustainability. Charlie is a current participant in UBC's Sustainability Management Certificate program, and is also a current member of the Advisory Committee for the UBC Certificate in Integrated Marketing Strategy. She is Past President of the International Internet Marketing Association (IIMA).
DR. CHRISTOPHER JONES
DR. CHRISTOPHER JONES is Vice President, Public Affairs with the Tourism Industry Association of Canada, the national private-sector advocate for Canada's $70.6 billion tourism sector. Chris came to TIAC from the Railway Association of Canada, where he served as Director of Government Relations for five years. His previous experience includes working as a lobbyist for an Ottawa firm representing aerospace and high technology companies, as an analyst for Citicorp Investment Bank in London, as a lecturer in European Politics at the American University of Paris, as a writer in the Trade and Foreign Policy Communications Bureaux of the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade, and as an advisor to several Cabinet Ministers in the early 1980s. He has written articles for various publications, including The Globe and Mail and Policy Options, and guest-lectured at the Universities of Ottawa, Carleton, & Waterloo and the Canada School of Public Service.
JACQUELINE KUEHNEL
JACQUELINE KUEHNEL joined the Canadian travel industry in 1980 and her extensive experience encompasses all aspects of strategic planning, development and operations of outbound leisure travel. Until 2004, she was Vice President of Product at Signature Vacations, Canada, where she worked for 15 years. In 2005, Jacqueline established JK Consulting Enterprises where she consults to businesses on climate change, corporate social responsibility and sustainable development. She has associate agreements with organizations like The CarbonNeutral Company, Canadian Business for Social Responsibility, InterVISTAS, Vox International and the Caribbean Tourism Organization. In addition, she has taught, lectured and published research on tourism and CSR for the Ted Rogers School of Hospitality and Tourism Management at Ryerson University. Since 2007 Jacqueline has also programmed the only industry-led Responsible Travel and Tourism Forum for Baxter Travel Media.
Steven Pacifico
STEVEN PACIFICO has over 15 years experience and education in the environmental sector identifying sustainability and climate change issues, designing/implementing organizational and behaviour change projects, communicating and marketing sustainability issues to the public and private sector, and analyzing corporate social responsibility documentation. He has a Master of Environmental Studies from York University in 'applied sustainable development for organizational change', a Diploma in Business and Sustainability from the Schulich School of Business and an Undergraduate degree is in Environmental Sciences from the University of Guelph. He has worked, lived, studied, and traveled in over 20 countries and can speak Spanish, Japanese, Italian, and French.
